2020 MFA Council: Knowledge & Opportunities

Leslie Graham Spence and Matt Graham, Capital Region MFA Council

The 2020 Member and Family Advisory Council (MFA Council) is set to kick off with new members led by 6 Regional Liaisons, also family members, who will continue the work started in the first year of Council activity. Each MFA Council welcomes 3-5 new members for 2020, including several self advocates. They are joining 2019 members to set up an annual rotation in each council.

In 2019, each MFA Council set up the working structure and identified key needs and areas of interest for advisory activity. This included –

  • informational webinars
  • creating a mission statement
  • setting up task groups to address resource, advocacy and education needs

In 2020, the focus will shift to connecting Council members and LIFEPlan administration across regions, engaging with advocacy groups, and developing greater outreach to the community.

MFA Council members comments on their experience tell more of the story:

“I learned a number of things I wasn’t aware of – some from other council members about resources; some from staff members about the commitment to individuals LIFEPlan serves.”

“(Being on the Council)… has provided increased knowledge and awareness of the options and opportunities that exist in the community.”

“Learning and meeting other families and individuals in our state and helping share what we all know with each other has been rewarding.”
