The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has released an important draft policy that could make New York’s outdoor spaces more accessible for people with mobility disabilities. This update would help more people enjoy trails, forests, campgrounds, and other state lands.
What Are OPDMDs?
The policy focuses on Other Power‑Driven Mobility Devices (OPDMDs)—mobility tools that are powered by batteries or fuel and are not standard wheelchairs. These include:
- E‑bikes
- Scooters
- Golf carts
- Other small powered mobility devices
The draft policy aims to expand where OPDMDs can be used, offer clearer guidance, and improve access while still protecting public safety and natural resources.
