AUTISM AWARENESS VISOR CARD PROGRAM

New York State Police Launch New Initiative

The New York State Police have introduced the Autism Awareness Visor Card Program to support safer, clearer communication between law enforcement and individuals with autism.

With an estimated one in 45 adults in the U.S. diagnosed with autism, public interactions can present challenges due to differences in communication, sensory sensitivities, and social behavior. These may include:

  • Difficulty with conversation or eye contact
  • Repetitive speech or gestures
  • Sensitivity to lights, sounds, or smells

To help reduce misunderstandings during traffic stops or other encounters, each State Police patrol vehicle will now carry a visor card featuring simple visual icons. Troopers can use these icons to communicate more effectively and ease potential confusion or anxiety.

This program reflects the NYSP’s commitment to inclusive and respectful public service, recognizing the importance of adapting communication to meet diverse needs.
