RECOGNIZING CAREGIVERS

November is National Family Caregivers Month. This month is dedicated to honoring and supporting the millions of individuals who care for people facing illness, disability, or aging-related needs.

At LIFEPlan CCO NY, we recognize the dedication and sacrifice it takes to care for a loved one with a disability. We see it through working with the amazing members and families who receive services through our organizations, and for many of us, we know the experience intimately as parents and family members ourselves.

When you love someone with a disability, you may have to ask yourselves questions others may not. Will the world be kind to them? Are they living the best life they possibly can be? Who will care for them when I can’t? The weight of these questions can be heavy. That is why at LIFEPlan CCO NY, our goal is to help create peace of mind to caregivers wrestling with questions like these. To connect you with the services and supports your loved one needs in every area of their lives, throughout all stages of their life.

While caregiving is not an easy job, it comes with many meaningful experiences. Caring for someone with a disability provides new perspectives, new relationships, and new opportunities. And most caregivers know there is humor to be found even in difficult moments. Perhaps most notably, there is joy in watching someone you care for overcome a challenge or feel empowered to accomplish something new. The fulfillment and pride felt in these moments is unmatched.

Whether you care for someone full-time, balance your work and caregiving responsibilities, have help, or do it on your own, we see you. You are not alone- through every bag of medical equipment you’ve carried, every plan you’ve changed, every word of reassurance you’ve given, every educational forum, IEP meeting, and Life Plan meeting you’ve attended. But caregiving is more than logistics. We know your happiness is often tied to the person you care for. If they are having a bad day, you are having a bad day. We recognize your unique experience, and we wish you many good days ahead.
