Navigating Changes of Life: Grief and Loss

The Kennedy Willis Center on Down Syndrome will be hosting a series of fall webinars that will provide information and techniques on the grief process. It will include age-appropriate strategies for children and teens, as well as those with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

The Lunch and Learn webinar series will be facilitated by E. Adel Herge, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA of Jefferson Elder Care, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, and Brittany Goodrich, Director of the Kennedy Willis Center. All sessions will begin at 12 p.m. and will conclude by 1 p.m.

The sessions will be hosted through Zoom and will cover:

  • October 23 at 12 p.m.: An Introduction to Grief and Loss
  • October 30 at 12 p.m.: Grief and Loss in Children and Teens
  • November 6 at 12 p.m.: Grief and Loss in Adults
  • November 13 at 12 p.m.: Grief and Loss Support Strategies + Recorded Panel Session

Linda Clark, LCSW: Linda is a former bereavement counselor at Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. in New Hartford, New York. Linda provided individual bereavement counseling and also facilitated bereavement groups for young widows, spousal loss, and adult parental loss. She has led workshops and community education on grief and loss and has been sharing her knowledge and experience with individuals, families, and the greater community for over 25 years. Linda’s youngest daughter, Theresa, has Down syndrome and lives in a supported apartment in upstate New York.

Arlen Gaines, MSW, LCSW-C, APHSW-C: Arlen is the Director of Social Services with JSSA Hospice in Rockville, Maryland, where she leads the social work, chaplain, and volunteer teams, as well as the bereavement program. After close to 20 years of hospice social work, she developed a specialization in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their grief. She is the co-author of the award-winning I Have a Question series, which addresses complicated topics for children, inclusive of those with developmental disabilities, such as I Have a Question about Death, and I Have a Question about Cancer.
