ACCESSIBLE PARKS AND RECREATION

As the weather warms up, many of us look forward to spending more time outdoors. For people with disabilities, outdoor activities can present challenges due to mobility limitations and sensory sensitivities.

New York State Parks are making progress toward Universal Access, creating more inclusive opportunities for people of all abilities to enjoy the outdoors. Accessibility improvements include trail and beach mobility aids, ADA accessible campsites, wheelchair charging stations, and more!

You can find a list of Accessible Recreation Destinations (along with an interactive map) at Accessible Recreation Destinations – NYSDEC!

And did you know the NYS Parks Access Pass is available for free or at a discounted cost for people with an qualifying disability?

When planning your outdoor activities, help set your group up for success by prioritizing rest breaks, bringing plenty of water, spending time in shaded areas, and packing any necessary assistive tools. Because everyone deserves the opportunity to fully enjoy the great outdoors!

The NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) has partnered with the NYS State Parks, DEC, the Office of the Chief Disability Officer, the Department of Veterans Services, the Office of Mental Health, and the Justice Center to host the annual Get Outdoors and Get Together Day.

On Saturday, June 13, accessible outdoor events will take place across New York State. Activities may include fishing, nature walks and hikes, birding, archery, camping, paddling, arts and crafts, and more. Most events will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
