A Mother’s Reflection on Progress and Possibility as Her Son Prepares for the 7th Grade
Brenden Sinon recently graduated from 6th grade and is heading into 7th grade with excitement and optimism! His mom, Debbie Sinon, reflects on the journey so far, sharing how she’s supported Brenden’s growth, both in and out of the classroom, by empowering him to make choices that reflect his interests and goals. As he prepares for a new school year, Debbie continues to encourage his independence, helping him build confidence and navigate this next chapter with a strong sense of self.
“Brenden was diagnosed with autism at 18 months (although I knew at 6 months that he was autistic) and began preschool through Mid-Hudson Regional at 24 months. When it came time for kindergarten, we searched for a program that specialized in autism—and found the perfect fit at the Center for Spectrum Services (CSS). Brenden was accepted into their preschool program a year early, and from the moment he arrived, it felt like home.
He started out nonverbal, but by age 7, he began speaking, and his skills have steadily grown ever since through his hard work and determination. Now entering 7th grade, Brenden is excited to meet new friends and continue building on the progress he’s made.
His journey has been featured in Chronogram Magazine, and one of our most cherished memories was shared by CSS in this quote—the first time he called me “Mommy.”
Brenden is a vibrant, curious young man with a deep love for trains. He uses his phone, computer, and tablet to record videos, take photos, and create stories—often starring his stuffed bear, Lame-O. He especially enjoys train-watching and rail-fanning, documenting each experience with care. His favorites include Amtrak, New Haven MTA, CSX freight trains, and the new Conrail. Every June, we travel to Strasburg, Pa., to see Thomas the Tank Engine and sleep in a converted train car. We also ride the Polar Express each winter—traditions he treasures.
Beyond trains, Brenden is actively involved in TOPS Fishkill Soccer, Wappingers Challenger Baseball, LaGrange Challenger Bowling, music, swimming, and horseback riding lessons. Graduating from CSS was bittersweet—we built lasting relationships there—but Brenden was ready for the next chapter. We toured several schools and asked him which one felt right. He chose his new school all on his own, and we believe it’s the best fit for him. When I asked what he’s most excited about, he said, “the art & music room and lunch!”
This is Brenden’s story, and he’s at center stage. My husband, Jim, and I believe it’s essential that he’s heard. He inspires us daily—he makes me a better person, and I’ve learned so much from him. Our advocacy extends beyond Brenden; we fundraise for autism charities every year, organizing events with over 150 attendees.
The key to his progress has been our—and his—refusal to give up. With every challenge, we lean into possibility, and Brenden continues to show us just how far determination and support can go. This short story is just one example of how we never give up on him.”
