Member Featured on Billboard as Part of Down Syndrome Awareness

October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month! It is a time to support the Down syndrome community, raise awareness, and celebrate the abilities of people with Down syndrome.

One of our very own members, Brinley, was recently featured on a billboard in New York City’s Times Square. It was part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual video presentation. The presentation highlighted individuals with Down syndrome.

Brinley’s photo was chosen out of over 3,000 photos submitted from all 50 states and 14 countries. She is featured with over 500 other representatives in the one-hour presentation.

In the photo above, Brinley, in yellow, is pictured with her mother, Angela; father, Andy; and brother, Corban; as they see her up on the big screen for the first time.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition, affecting one in every 775 babies born in the United States (according to the CDC). People with Down syndrome have a full or partial third copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic information can alter development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.
