Innovative Housing Opportunities for People with Disabilities

Support this Bill!

Did you know there is a scarcity of housing options in New York State for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities? This fact has parents and family members of adults with I/DD worried about the future – asking,

What will happen to my son/daughter/family member when I can no longer care for them? Where will they live?

On March 7, Assembly member Tom Abinanti, and Assembly member Al Stirpe co-sponsored a new bill (A9492) in the NYS Legislature to provide innovative housing opportunities for persons with a developmental disability, enabling them to live together and with greater independence. On March 8, the same bill was sponsored by Senator John Mannion in the Senate (S8521A).

This important bill does not request any funding, focusing on the creation of innovative supportive housing programs for persons with a developmental disability who wish and are able to safely reside in such a setting.
